Algamja-jorim (Braised Baby Potatoes)

These are super yummy whether served as a side dish to any Korean meal or just as a simple snack.

I remember one particular trip to Korea and during an amazing road trip, we stopped for some snacks and Algamja-jorim was the petrol station ‘grab and go’ treat. Very different to the bag of chips and chocolate that I was used to growing up in Canada. These little potatoes are a taste sensation.

Gamja is Korean for potatoes, jorim means braised and al means egg, which tells us how small these potatoes are, like quail eggs.

If eating as a snack, use toothpicks or skewers to poke and eat. Any leftovers will keep for about 3 days in the fridge.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of baby potatoes

  • 2 Tbsp vegetable or any cooking oil

  • 3 Tbsps soy sauce

  • 3 Tbsp rice syrup, honey or sugar

  • 1 clove minced garlic

  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil

  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds

Method

  1. Wash potatoes well.

  2. Add oil to pan and heat.

  3. Add potatoes and cook until fully cooked – around 20-25 mins.

  4. Keep moving the potatoes around the pan to avoid burning and ensure even cooking.

  5. Once cooked (you can test with a skewer or fork. Make sure you can insert with ease), turn the heat down, add the soy sauce, rice syrup, honey or sugar and garlic and stir.

  6. Turn the heat back up and keep stirring.

  7. Cook until the sauce is reduced around 4 more minutes.

  8. Remove from heat, mix sesame oil through, sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with your meal or on their own.
